Waxing is a method of semi-permanent hair removal which removes the hair from the root. New hairs will not grow back in the previously waxed area for two to eight weeks. Almost any area of the body can be waxed, including eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet. There are many types of waxing suitable for removing unwanted hair.
There are many benefits to waxing versus other forms of hair removal. It is an effective method to remove large amounts of hair at one time. It is a long-lasting method. Hair in waxed areas will not grow back for two to eight weeks. When hair is shaved or removed by depilatory cream, the hair is removed at the surface rather than the root. Within a few days, the hair can be seen at the surface. With these methods, hair tends to grow back in a rough stubble. Areas that are repeatedly waxed over long periods of time often exhibit regrowth that is softer.
Frequently asked questions about Waxing:
Waxing is one of the best ways to temporarily remove unwanted hair. It is more effective than shaving because it removes hair from the roots, not just from the skin’s surface. If waxed regularly over time, hair in waxed areas regrows lighter and sparser. For facial waxing, removal of unwanted facial hair allows for a more youthful look and application of makeup goes on smoother and better. Brow shaping can really open up the eyes and a great shape can dramatically change your appearance.
What areas of the body can be waxed?
Waxing can be done on almost any part of the body. A small area can be patch tested first for sensitivity. Most popular waxed areas for women are brazilian or bikini, legs, underarms and eyebrows. For men: chest and back. The exceptions for waxing are the beards and inside the ears.
How long will the results last?
After a client’s first waxing, the results can last 3 - 6 weeks depending on the individual’s hair re-growth. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week. With regular waxing, the length of time between treatments will increase.
Will the hair grow back thicker?
No. Regular and continued waxing usually results in sparser and finer hair re-growth.
Are there any health precautions to keep in mind?
Accutane Patients: AVOID all waxing while on Accutane and for a minimum of 6-12 months after coming off the medication or consult your dermatologist about when to proceed.
Some physicians do not recommend waxing for persons suffering from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation as they are more susceptible to infection.
Facial waxing is not recommended for clients currently using Retin A, Renova, Differin or other types of skin thinning acne medications. Please read the label carefully and consult your dermatologist if you are taking any medication or using any topical cream that contains these medications or stop for 7 days prior to waxing.
Individuals do react differently to these medications and sometimes waxing can be done if proper patch testing is completed.
Please be completely honest with your Skin Care Therapist about all allergies and medications you are taking - it is for your protection.
Women may experience extra sensitivity up to a week prior to the beginning of their menstrual cycle.
What are the possible side effects of waxing and how can they be minimized?
Although we can not predict or guarantee who may react, most clients do not experience reactions beyond redness and minor irritation. Hair may break at the root during waxing, causing some hairs to grow out faster. Please follow these guidelines to minimize irritation and possible breakouts.
- Treat skin gently afterwards - no sun exposure, abrasives or exfoliation for 24-48 hrs. on the area.
- Wear sun screen; recently waxed areas are prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin)
if exposed to the sun.
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and other heated sources for at least 48 hours.
- Do not use exfoliating products (AHAs, scrubs, etc) and loofas until at least 24 hours after waxing the area.
- Regular exfoliation may be helpful for those prone to ingrown hairs on the body.
- Routine waxing helps the skin get accustomed to the procedure and may minimize irritation.
- Sunburned, irritated or thin skin areas should not be waxed.
What type of wax products is used?
Only the best and most gentle waxes are used for all our waxing procedures.
What is the difference between a Bikini Wax and a Brazilian Wax?
A standard bikini wax is more conservative and generally involves removing hair to just inside the panty or swimsuit line. Hair removal is limited to the top and sides of the bikini line.
The Brazilian technique is getting more and more popular. Brazilian waxing refers to hair removal from the entire pubic region from front to back. An option for apprehensive first-timers is to start with a bikini wax and gradually work your way to a Brazilian on future visits.
What is Brazilian waxing?
This is a very intimate type of waxing and is getting more and more popular to attain clean, smooth and soft skin. Brazilian waxing refers to hair removal from the entire pubic region from front to back. Most women prefer to take it all off, but some leave a small patch of hair above the vaginal area. Many women request a Brazilian wax because it gives a neat, clean, close wax and the freedom to wear even the most revealing swimwear and lingerie.
What do I wear during Brazilian waxing?
You will be asked to remove all clothing from the waist down and a towel will be provided to drape over you until you are ready to be waxed. Removing your underwear will ensure that you will get the maximum results. Upon request, a disposable bikini thong can be provided, but if you are comfortable and to achieve the best result, the waxing will be done without any underwear.
How is Brazilian waxing done?
A combination of SOFT and HARD wax is used depending on the area. For the soft wax, a thin layer of warm wax is applied and a strip is placed over the area covered with wax and pulled off quickly and efficiently. For the hard wax, a thicker layer of warm wax is applied on the area and after about 1 min., it will dry and then pulled off. Any stray hairs are removed with tweezing.
How long is the procedure?
It takes approximately 20-30 minutes. If it is your first time or you have not waxed in a long time, it may take a little longer depending on the hair growth.
Why is it better than other hair removal techniques?
As a temporary hair removal technique, it is certainly the best way to remove your hair leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft. We do recommend our EPL Hair Removal service which is less painful and more permanent than waxing, saving you money and time.
Waxing is more effective than shaving because it removes hair from the roots, not just from the skin’s surface. It has longer lasting results than shaving or creams. It reduces ingrown hairs that can often occur from shaving. The hair often grows back finer and sparser with regular waxing.
How often can I have a Brazilian wax?
The only thing about waxing is that you have to wait until your hair grows to a certain length (usually 1/4 inch). It depends on the individual, but usually anywhere between 3-6 weeks.
Does Brazilian waxing hurt?
Yes, but only during the waxing procedure when the wax is pulled off, then the pain subsides right away. How much it hurts depends on the individual. Most people expect it to hurt more that it does and gradually it gets better if you are waxing regularly. Most women say it's worth it! Again, we strongly recommend our Laser Hair Removal service which is a more permanent, less painful treatment, saving you money and time.
