I recently visited Second Skin Medspa, to redeem a Botox voucher I had purchased. Yes.. CrossFiters and hardcore trainers such as myself, tend to make faces when lifting heavy loads, which isn’t great for the face at all.. lol. This wasn’t my first time getting Botox.. I have in fact received Botox from several places in the city, So I consider myself well-versed on the subject. That being said.. this was the FIRST and ONLY time that  my technician actually MARKED my faced, so that he would know where to inject! (most technicians ask you to raise your eyebrows and relax, to estimate where they will inject) I was pleasantly surprised at his diligence, to be honest, seeing as this WAS the only time this had ever happened to me.. so when I commented on this,  he asked me if I would trust a builder without a plan to build me a house! Pure genius!! Seriously! I actually left the place WITHOUT the bumps I normally get from the injections ( I normally get raised bumps and bruises on my forehead). NO ONE would have actually known where I was actually from. The Botox I received also looks great!! So yes.. I will be back.
Besides all this, I found all the staff to be super friendly and relaxed.. which was a great bonus! Sure the location is a little hard to find.. but consider this a well hidden gem within the city!!.
Highly recommend. WILL be back. Absolutely!!
GO!!

I am writting to recommend their 3D skin rejuvenation treatment and the botox treatment.
I’ve never had a silk peel, and definetaly never had a chemical peel, but Rose was so great at explaining everything that was happening to my skin and how she could help resolve some of my major issues that I had to try it.  Not sure if they still have the promotion going, but the price was fantastic.
I had the silkpeel first and I could already see that my skin was smooth and felt fresh. I couldn’t stop touching my face.  Then came the chemical peel. i felt a little stinging sensation, but it wasn’t burning or anything like that. The whole think took about 30 min and it made much more of a difference than the products I am using. It was well worth it.
One week after the treatment, I could see that my brown spots  were starting to come up to the surface and were literally peeling off and disappearing. Everything on the after care sheet and what I was told was happening, and I was very happy with the final results.
I showed up a week later for my botox treatment. If you think I was scared doing the chemical peel, how about when somebody is inserting a needle near your eye. The nurse was very calming and knowledable and answered all my questions and educated me on how botox actually works. The treatment only took about 5 min and he went over the after care sheet and took before pics and that was that. It was good experience. 3 days after this I could already see my very angry lines dissapearing. It was a weird feeling because i’ve been using thos angry lines for 40 somthing years and all of a sudden i couldn’t use them anymore. It looks great and I want to thank the owners and staff of second skin for being so courteous and kind throughout the whole process.

Update – 11/20/2012

My mom and I went to this med spa after purchasing a couple of vouchers for a manicure and pedicure, and we were very happy with the treatment provided by this company.
The spa feels very homey, almost like a high end condo.  My mother who never goes for manicures or pedicures felt very comfortable on the nice white leather couch. The lamps, mirrors, hardwood floors, etc, just made it seem as if we were at a friends house getting our nails done. We sat side by side and we really enjoyed ourselves.
I’ve never had a shellac manicure, but it did last a couple of weeks before I had to go back for a touchup. The ladies doing our nails were very nice and chatty, however, they new when not to interrupt us when we were talking, but knew exactly when to jump in and start up a conversation.
The pedicures were nicely and neatly done. I love their moveable pedicure station. They told us that it was for sanitary reasons and that they clean the bowl and take a part the jets and steralize after each and every customer, which later I found out is a very good technique because evidently one can get fungus, viruses, and other nasty things by using those pedicure chairs.
Overall, it was a great time!  They fit us in last minute, the spa is very clean and neat, and you can tell that they take their business seriously.
We both ended up buying a follow up package which was a very good deal to come in and have a touch up (shellac removal and re-application).
Thanks for the great experience, it won’t be forgotten.

Love it! Love it! Love it!
I had my first manicure, pedicure and facial at second skin and I was very impressed by the service and professionalism at this spa.  As other reviewers wrote, the spa is very homey and very clean. I don’t like going to the cheap manicure and pedicure places where you sit in a huge spa chair on what looks like an assembly line at a manufacturing plant.  They have a big beautiful white leather couch, beautiful floors, and barn doors (which I love and will be getting for my house).
The mani and pedi were very customized to my liking, I upgraded the prescription facial to a Silkpeel, and loved it!!!!!  My skin was smooth, plump and buffed to a nice shine.  I upgraded to the Shellac polish for my fingernails and after two weeks, there is only minor chipping.
I had a great time. I’m glad I found this spa and I will be returning.

I’m very happy with the treatments I receive at Second Skin.  I go to SS for underarm laser hair removal and after 3-4 treatments I see that my hairs don’t grow back as fast, and are much thinner. I hate shaving!!!! I’ve upgraded to other areas of my body, cant wait to be hair free.
Their prices are reasonable and they usually have some sort of promotion going on for the different seasons which is cool. I like the fact that I get confirmation emails that I can load into my phone and reminder calls 2 or 3 days before my appointment.
Give them I try, I did and that is why I am leaving this review.
Thanks

I really enjoy going to second skin. The staff are really friendly and outgoing, and they always make you feel comfortable, as if I’ve know them for years.  I’ve been going there for about 6 months and I can clearly see the results – my skin has gone from acne to much, much more clearer, healthier skin. Rose really cares about my skin and they don’t puch me to buy products or procedures.
I go for a silkpeel and chemical peel every 4-6 weeks, and I can tell you that the results are amazing.
I don’t write many reviews, but if this reviews helps one person to go in and take care of their skin, then I am glad to write it.  My confidence and self esteem has gone up a lot since I first started going to second skin.

Ive always wanted to try laser hair removal for the areas that I get razor irritation from daily shaving. I saw that Second Skin Medspa was doing a deal with laser hair removal treatments. I purchased this deal and made my phone call. Rose was very polite from the beginning and promptly made my appointment.
The location of the spa is very easy to get to and the atmosphere is clean, professional and relaxing. Upon arrival I did all my documents and entered the spacious treatment room (keep in mind im 6’2” so its big enough for me).
Rose explained to me what the laser does, how it works and what the benefits and procautions are. I felt confident in her experience and expertise. She kept me comfortable and relaxed and made sure I was in no pain. She talked me through the procedure, had some laughs and was on my way. I think this is a very easy and quick way to get rid of unwanted hair and definitely am excited to go back for my next appointment and see my end results.
Highly recommend this spa for any procedure you are looking to do!

I come all the way from Mississauga to Second Skin just for Rose. I am darker skin tone, and she was able to remove all my hair from my legs, upper lip and chin. I am having other treatments done and I to can see results. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. This is my first time writting a review and I’m glad that it is for Rose and Second Skin.

3D Skin Rejuvenation Toronto – Only at Second Skin Medspa

3D Skin Rejuvenation Toronto

Would you like to know the secret to beautiful, healthy skin, free of charge?  Answer: The secret to healthy skin is CELLULAR TURNOVER!

Why do kids have such great looking skin? They have such great skin because their cellular turnover only takes 14 days!  As we age and get to our 20′s, it takes approx. 30 days for our cells to turnover. The worst news…as we get into our 40′s, it could take up to 50 days for our skin cells to turn over resulting in rough, grayish, scaly looking skin.

So, by now you should be wondering what I mean by cellular turnover, right?  Cellular turnover is the term used to describe the constant shedding of dead skin cells and subsequent replacement with younger cells.

How do we achieve cellular turnover?   Answer: Mechanical, Natural, and/or chemical exfoliation.

Here are some facts before we carry on:

  • Your skin is composed of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, is a tough, protective layer. The dermis, or inner layer, is thicker than the epidermis and provides your skin its strength and elasticity. The dermis houses fibroblast cells which are responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Exfoliation trigger these cells to jump into action, thereby stimulating collagen and elastin production for more youthful looking skin.
  • 90% of aging is the result of UV exposure! Only 10% is caused by natural aging. Protect your skin all year long with sunscreen.
  • Your body – and ALL types of skin – needs water to survive – inside and out of the cells. At Second Skin Medspa we only use medical grade products (Second Skin Solutions) which allows you to put moisture and topical solutions (CoQ 10, DMAE, etc) back into the skin to improve the look and feel of your skin.
  • Skin cell turnover naturally slows with age. You can promote cell turnover and more youthful and healthier looking skin with the use of natural, chemical or mechanical exfoliants.
  • Skin cells repair at night, making it essential to using a night time moisturizer to enhance this benefit.
  • The skin around your eyes is delicate and thinner, making specialized eye care essential.  At Second Skin Medspa, we use 99% pure medical grade Collagen and Elastin products which are small enough to penetrate the skin and work it’s way back into the dermis in order to achieve plumpness and tightness again.

So, how is Second Skin Medspa able to achieve cellular turnover? Answer: through our 3D Skin Rejuvenation treatment.

Whether your concerned about fine lines and wrinckles, loss of elasticity, rough skin, pigmentation or sun spots, Second Skin Medspas’ 3D Skin Rejuvenation will target your main concern and make your skin look and feel as young as you do.

Right now, and until September 29 you will be able to try our 1D, 2D or 3D treatment at 50% Off the regular price:

1D Option – Silkpeel Dermalinfusion $79 (Reg. $159).

SilkPeel is a breakthrough procedure that exfoliates the skin while infusing patient specific topical medication. The SilkPeel stimulates new cell growth and addresses each patient’s specific skin condition.

2D Option – Silkpeel + Chemical Peel OR Photofacial $149 (Reg. $288).

Adding a Chemical Peel OR Photofacial to your Silkpeel treatment helps to further break up the hardened melanin and exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture and color. The stronger the peel, the deeper it penetrates into the skin for maximum cell renewal and collagen synthesis.

3D Option – Silkpeel + Chemical Peel + Photofacial $199 (Reg. $388).

Having a Silkpeel, a photofacial and finally a Chemical Peel is the most effective technique to fully rejuvenate your skin. The Silkpeel exfoliates the skin thoroughly, stimulating new cell growth. The Photofacial breaks up the hardened melanin in the
skin, allowing it to rise to the surface, and naturally exfoliate off of the skin. The chemical peel eats up the dead skin cells, and allows  for new, healthy skin cell growth. The final product is new, clean, fresh skin with little to no pigmentation.

You can choose one option above, and put the regular price value towards a package of 3 sessions!  Package of 3 can be paid using Pay As You Glow Option!

3D Steps to Beautiful Skin Rejuvenation – Only at Second Skin Medspa!

Featured

So, you’ve enjoyed the beautiful summer we’ve been having by laying out in the sunshine and darkening your skin to get that bronze tanned look – otherwise known as Sun Damage.

What exactly is a Tan?

Simply put – Sun Damage!  When you are exposed to UVA and UVB radiation (Sunlight), your skin either spreads out the melanin already in your skin to give you an immediate tan, or your skin produces more melanin which darkens your skin over a few days.  Either way your skin darkens in order to protect itself from further sun damage to the underlying layers. The darker your skin, the less likely UVA and UVB can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin possibly causing DNA and cellular damage.  Damage can include the breaking down of collagen and elastin: giving you that rubbery, leathery, wrinkled look, age spots, actinic keratoses, and skin cancer – including melanoma, the most serious type.  UV exposure can also cause an increase in the thickness of the dead skin cell layer of your skin (stratum corneum), giving your skin the thick, greyish, unhealthy look.

Wrinkles

The sun’s rays make skin look old and wrinkled years before it should. More than 80% of the signs of skin aging in adults are the result of the tans they had as teens before the age of 18. That’s because over time, the sun’s ultraviolet light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.

Pigmentation

Too much sun also causes irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin. Some areas of the skin appear darker, while others look lighter. The sun can also cause a permanent stretching of small blood vessels, giving your skin a reddish appearance.

What is 3D Rejuvenation?

In order to reverse the effects of Sun Damage: fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, brown spots, age spots, and re-introducing collagen and elastin into your skin, Second Skin Medspa has come up with 3D Rejuvenation, which includes:

(1D) Silkpeel Dermalinfusion

The SilkPeel is a breakthrough procedure that exfoliates the skin while infusing patient-specific topical medication. The SilkPeel stimulates new cell growth and addresses each patient’s specific skin condition. Skin conditions treated are:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne
  • Dry, irritated skin
  • Rosacea
  • Photodamage
  • Dehydration and fine wrinkles

(2D) IPL Photofacial (+ Silkpeel Dermalinfusion)

The Photofacial is a safe and reliable process of using an Intense Pulsed Light to treat facial redness and flushing from rosacea, as well as multiple symptoms of aging skin. Symptoms include fine lines, red blemishes, mottled coloration, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse or rough skin, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and general sun damage. The result is a youthful, smooth and revitalized appearance.

The IPL hand-piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. A treatment generally lasts about half an hour. Immediately following a treatment, the skin may appear red and flushed and tiny capillaries may appear more visible. But, this will give way to healthy, young-looking skin. After having a photofacial you can resume all regular activities, there is absolutely NO DOWNTIME after this procedure.

In the coming days following your treatment, you will notice your pigmentation darken, and even see visible “coffee grinds” on the top layers of your skin which will gently exfoliate off your skin, revealing fresh, new, healthy skin beneath.

(3D) PCA Chemical Peel (+IPL Photofacial + Silkpeel Dermalinfusion)

A PCA Chemical Peel at Second Skin Medspa can:

  • Smooth rough skin and improve its texture
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Eliminate brown splotches and age spots
  • Improve the appearance of scars caused by acne
  • Control acne breakouts

Following the chemical peel treatment most patients immediately resume their normal activities. Most patients report that their skin feels softer and smoother. Most post-peel redness is slight and can be covered with makeup. Some patients may experience slight flaking in the few days following the peel treatment, but it is not necessary to see flaking skin for the peel to be effective.

At Second Skin Medspa the combination of all 3 of these treatments results in younger, fresher, healthier looking skin.  Rough, dry skin is softened. Pigmentation is reduced or eliminated, leading to a more even type skin tone. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced or eliminated, leading to collagen and elastin re-generation and skin tightening.  Age or Brown spots are broken down and rise to the surface of the skin, gently being exfoliated, and leading to removal of these pesky dark spots.

It takes the skin, on average, 28 days to turnover (new skin to move from the bottom layer to the top layer), thus, you will see ongoing positive results days and weeks after your treatments.  Although you will see results after your very first treatment, we recommend a series of 3 treatments for optimal results.

Call Second Skin Medspa today for your free skin analysis and consultation.  EveryBODY is different, and thus we tailor our treatments based on your skin type, skin condition and the type of results you are looking for.

The Horrors of Accutane for Acne Free Skin

Featured

How far would you go to have Acne Free Skin?

Medical Doctors have been prescribing Accutane to help Acne Prone patients resolve their skin issues, however, were the patients clearly educated about the horrible side-effects of Accutane?

Accutane has a number of very severe side effects. Several of these side effects are even considered life threatening and common enough that the FDA requires the drug to carry a “Black Box Label” for them.

Severe Accutane side effects range from chronic bowel disorders; like Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Chron’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis, suicidal tendencies, and even birth defects. Most of these side effects are chronic and remain even after the patient stops taking the drug.

Possible side effects include:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Severe depression
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Birth defects
  • Liver damage (characterized by loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea and yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Thinning of the hair or hair loss
  • Headache
  • Brittle nails
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Changes in menstruation such as an irregular or heavy period
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe dryness of the skin, particularly on the lips, genitals or nose
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Unusual bruising, bleeding or slow-healing cuts
  • Eczema
  • Flare-ups of acne
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Skin conditions and infections such as impetigo, paronychia or pyogenic granuloma

So, again, how far would you go to have Acne Free Skin?  Want to know what Second Skin Medspa can do for you to help clear your skin of Acne?

At Second Skin Medspa we use a combination of therapies that will help clear your skin without the horrible side-effects of Accutane.

SILKPEEL DERMALINFUSION

Similar to microdermabrasion, The SilkPeel Dermalinfusion System combines non-invasive exfoliation with deep delivery of patient-specific solutions directly to the skin without the use of crystal or other chemical exfoliants. The procedure is non-invasive and even soothing; delivering the results you want without harsh chemicals or uncomfortable treatments!

SilkPeel can dramatically improve acne by multiple means, each addressing a specific cause and combining to bring amazing outcomes.  SilkPeel acts as a “clean and safe superficial mechanical abrader”, exfoliating the Hyperkeratinization (accumulation of the dead skin cells on top layer of the dermis). Simultaneously, it infuses a clarifying solution containing salicylic acid, which acts on the bacteria while also aiding in the exfoliation.

PCA Chemical Peels

Chemical  peels are extraordinary treatments that can help repair a variety of skin  problems and improve the overall look and feel of your skin. Depending on your  needs, Second Skin offers an array of medical chemical grade peels ranging from  the “lunch time peel” with no downtime to a deeper peelings with  minimal downtime varying on your personal skin requirements and goals.  Chemical peels exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin  layer with improved tone, texture and color. The stronger the peel, the deeper  it penetrates into the skin for maximum cell renewal and collagen synthesis.  Immediately after the first treatment, your skin will feel softer and smoother.  This chemical peel is successfully used on the face, neck, hands and chest. Chemical peels work on acne prone skin by removing the top, dead layer of the skin allowing for the unclogging of pores and entrance of oxygen into the skin – which kills off the acne causing bacteria.

At Second Skin we strive to  educate each client based on their skin care knowledge.  Educating our clients about their own skin  increases and promotes good skin care practices. Good skin care doesn’t start  and end in our clinic; skin must be maintained daily in order to see optimal  results.

We encourage you to talk with one of our skin care specialists before ever going on Accutane to resolve your Acne Prone skin care issues…

Be Eye-Catching! – Eyelash Perming at Second Skin Medspa

Featured

As a busy woman, you may be interested to discover that eyelash perming is a  step you can take to shave minutes off of your makeup routine. If you are  searching for ways to look refreshed throughout a hectic day and you wish you  could make the effects last forever, you almost can. Though the timing varies  for each individual, lash perms are generally noticeable for up to a month and a  half. If this is a cosmetic procedure you are looking to try, for safety  purposes you may want to educate yourself on both the benefits and risks  involved.

This procedure also offers men and women a more natural way of making the  eyelashes more visible and plumper. Active women can benefit from eyelash  perming because the curls of the eyelashes will not go away even in extreme physical conditions. Men today are also using eyelash perming to enhance  appearance dramatically without an eye-catching change.

Benefits

  • You no longer have to use an eyelash curler to get uplifted lashes. With the  eyelash perming procedure, you can have wider open eyes whether you have just  woken up, are in the middle of an intense physical workout or are fresh out of  the shower. Those who have very straight lashes may particularly be curious  about having them permed. Know, however, that the advantages of eyelash perming  do not include newly darker lashes nor longer ones, even though the illusion of  greater lengths can certainly be a byproduct of having lashes that are pointing  skyward. If you are interested in similar alternatives along the lines of  semi-permanent procedures, you will have to explore the option of getting  eyelash extensions for lashes with greater volume and  length.History

History

  • Prior to the availability of eyelash perms, makeup users turned to lash  curlers and mascara to create the look of upturned lashes. As compared to these  methods, eyelash perming is relatively new since it only began to gain  popularity in the early 21st century.
The first eyelash curler showed up  around the 1920s through 1930s; it was invented by the Kurlash company and was  apparently more complicated to operate than the modern-day variety. Over time,  lash curlers have evolved to include a heated version, which locks the curl in  the same way hair gets curled with the use of a curling iron. The application of  mascara onto curled lashes enhances their appearance by darkening each lash, as  well as adding a touch more length, depending on the formula. As the process can  eat away more minutes than a frenzied schedule can comfortably allow, the  not-so-dexterous may opt for an eyelash perm, instead.

Function

  • Eyelash perms typically last up to a month and a half although they have been  known to last for as long as three months. As the permed lashes fall out and  are replaced by straighter ones, the uplifted effect of an eyelash perm  disappears. Those with small or droopy eyes in particular may be the most notable fans of eyelash perming, as it helps give the eyes a larger, brighter appearance.
The actual process involves lying down and closing your eyes as our esthetician wraps your lashes around a thin roller. Gauze is positioned on  the under-eye area as a protective measure. A perming solution is then applied  to your lashes and allowed to set. Other lotions and formulas may be brushed onto the lashes for neutralizing and conditioning purposes, leading the process  to last anywhere between a half-hour to an hour.

Considerations

  • If you find that you are allergic to any ingredients in the solution used for eyelash perming or you simply do not want any potentially harmful chemicals near your eyes, stick with mascara and an eyelash curler. The possibility of  weakening your lashes by exposing them to toxic perming solutions is a very real one, which leads to lash breakage and a quicker rate of falling out.
On  another note, it is a fact that women aren’t the only clients of the procedure.  A male who is fastidious about his looks and thinking about benefiting from  eyelash perming is more than welcome

Warning

  • Do not attempt to perm eyelashes, whether your own or someone else’s, if you  are not a professional. There are do-it-yourself eyelash perming kits being sold  for home use, but realize that you are putting the health of your eyes in danger  should you try this without a certification. Side effects of the procedure have  been known to include stinging around the eyes. Even if this can be medicated  away with the help of eye drops, the fact that you would have to do such a thing  after a beauty treatment might help you rethink whether this is a risk you are  willing to take.

Lumigan (Latisse)

Want to curl your lashes but can’t because you suffer from short lashes? Do you wish you had longer lashes? At Second Skin Medspa we offer our clients the ability to have longer, thicker and darker lashes using Lumigan (Latisse). Once your lashes have grown out, we will then curl those long and beautiful lashes that will make your eyes stand out by performing our Eye Lash Curl treatment.

At Second Skin Medspa, our expert skin therapists and medical estheticians are well versed in Eye Lash Perming, and always have your safety in mind.  Come experience the benefits of Eye Lash Perming at Second Skin, and have others wondering “What’s Your Secret?”

Come to Second Skin Medspa for all your skin care needs from “Head to Toes!”

What is the cause of skin damage and aging?

Featured

by Debra

Scientists now know, disease begins first at the cellular level.  It is free radicals that attack your skin, and cause damage to your skin cell’s DNA. These damaged/toxic cells then reproduce more toxic cells, which cause skin damage/aging.

Where do all these free radicals come from?

One puff of exhaust from a city bus could expose your skin to more pollutants than those your grandmother was exposed to in her whole lifetime.

Air pollution, fluorescent lights, and some computer screens, even tap water with iron in it – all of these expose your skin to more free radicals than any generation before us. And, since your skin can no longer keep up with these assaults, a chain reaction of oxidation is happening right on it.  It’s like your skin is….rusting.

Welcome to modern society, right?  Free radicals run free and your skin really does look like it’s aging faster than you are.

We have the environment to thank for unprecedented levels of free radicals challenging the skin cells you have right now.  But here’s the real problem.  These same free radicals also cause damage to the skin cells you’ll have in the future.  Which means that without intervention, damaged skin cells continue to emerge and make your skin look older – way before its time.

In short, skin you don’t even see yet already looks older.

What are the major sources of free radicals in/on our skin?

1) Unprotected sun exposure

2) Pollution/chemical exposure/smoking

3) Skin care products- ingredients that produce free radicals (i.e. benzoyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, etc)

4) Normal chemical processes in the body that give off free radicals

So what’s the solution to all of this free radical damage?

Fortunately for us, science has also discovered that antioxidants have the ability to stop the chain reaction of free radical cellular damage.  As they prevent free radial damage they actually slow the aging process.

Want to sustain the youthful appearance of your skin?  It’s pretty simple.  Increase your antioxidant nutrients, which will allow your skin to make healthy cells.  Who then, reproduce more healthy cells. The keys to more healthy-looking radiant skin – nutrients!

Antioxidant nutrient ingredients such as vitamins A, C, & E, grapeseed extract, panthenol, and beta glucan should be in every topical product we put on our skin, and definitely in our sun protection we wear everyday. We must also avoid all skin care products containing free radical producing ingredients.

Because, eating a diet rich in antioxidants is simply not enough.  It is estimated that only about 2-3% of the antioxidants we eat, get to the skin. To significantly reduce skin damage and repair the skin, we must apply products to our skin that contain high levels of antioxidants.  The epidermis has no direct supply of blood to provide antioxidants, and it also has the greatest exposure to sun and chemicals. Our skin is literally craving antioxidants.

The good news – our skin can tolerate an infinite supply of antioxidants. When we give our skin the nutrients  it craves, the skin’s aging process will dramatically slow down – provided the skin is protected from sun damage and free radicals are no longer being applied to the skin.  It will produce healthy cells. Healthy cells = healthy, soft, radiant looking skin.

Anti-aging skin concerns are not just for baby boomers. It is estimated that between birth and age 27, our body’s antioxidant levels pretty much equal  the intensity of our free radical attacks.  But from age 27 and on, our antioxidant levels decline, and free radical damage increases.  By age 82, free radical damage is 60 times greater than at age 22.

Our goal for younger looking skin then, is to increase antioxidant usage and keep it at a rate greater than the rate of free radical damage to our cells.  Topical antioxidant skin care will protect you.  The result will be anti-aging and rejuvenating!

At Second Skin Medspa we provide a variety of treatments and products to help increase the skins absorption of antioxidants to fight the signs of aging.  Speak to one of our skin care therapists and ask how we can help you reverse the signs of aging.

Why is Adult Acne on the Rise?

Featured

Why is Adult Acne on the Rise?

by Dr. Diana Howard

More than ever before, adults are enduring the challenges of oily and acneic skin conditions. Clinical studies indicate that between 40 and 55 percent of the adult population age 20-40 are diagnosed with low grade, persistent acne and oily skin. According to the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 54 percent of women older than age 25 have some facial acne.

Research at The International Dermal Institute indicates that acne arising in adulthood is more likely to be inflammatory, with fewer comedones than teenage acne and lesions predominantly located around the mouth, chin and jaw line. Likewise, adults often have sensitized skin, or a combination of skin conditions in addition to their acne, which makes treatment more challenging than the treatment of teens, who generally have more resilient, uniform and oily skin.

What is Acne?
Acne is often described as a disease involving the sebaceous follicles and hair follicles of the skin. It occurs in people who have a genetic predisposition; if acne runs in the families of both parents, three out of four children may suffer from it.

Sebaceous and hair follicles are associated with a sebaceous gland that produces sebum, a complex mixture of lipids. In the hair follicle, the hair acts as a wick, transporting sebum and other cellular debris to the surface of the skin, where it is ultimately removed. Inflammation or infection is rarely associated with this type of follicle, unless the hair becomes ingrown or the opening of the hair follicle becomes clogged.

The sebaceous follicle, usually lacking a hair or containing only a rudimentary fine hair, is generally associated with the disease acne. Activity of the sebaceous gland is stimulated by many factors, including the onset of puberty, hormonal fluctuations, pharmaceutical agents, stress, using inappropriate products on the skin, heat, friction and humidity.

Why is Adult Acne on the Rise?
Triggered by hormones, acne can occur at any stage in our lives. The primary aggravating factor leading to adult acne is chronic stress. We all know that acute stress can cause a breakout from time to time. But chronic, continual stress increases hormone levels, which can lead to an increase in oil production.

One reason why adult acne is on the rise in the female population is because of the additional responsibilities that have increased women’s stress levels. The pressure to work outside the home to help maintain a steady family income while maintaining a functioning household is unique to this generation of women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Combine workplace stress with household responsibilities, cosmetics that contain known skin irritants and monthly hormone fluctuations and you have a perfect breeding ground for the formation of adult acne.

Adult acne can be aggravated by internal and external factors. Internally, the psychological effects of adult acne can contribute to continued flare-ups and breakouts. When adults are frustrated by the signs of acne on their skin, it causes additional emotional stress, which contributes to a continued increase in excess activity of the sebaceous glands and leads to the continued cycle of breakouts (and the need to “pick” or “squeeze” breakouts places even more acne-causing bacteria on the skin).

Some Dermatologists choose to place female clients suffering with adult acne on oral contraceptives. Oral contraceptives contain estrogen and progestin, which can help decrease the androgen activity responsible for adult acne. While often effective, this does leave clients open to the side effects that accompany oral contraceptives, including bloating, nausea and an increased risk for blood clots and strokes.

Dermatologists may also choose to put clients on a specific type of steroid, such as prednisone, to reduce the stress-related hormone reaction. However, steroids taken internally or applied can aggravate acne, not to mention that any kind of prolonged use of steroids can have adverse effects on one’s health.

SilkPeel Dermalinfusion: Solving Skin Issues All Over Your Body, And All Over The World

Posted Curtis Cluff

SilkPeel has become a primary standard of facial care in many medical practices and medi-spas across the United States and Canada.  Whether for hyperpigmentation, fine-line wrinkles, or improving overall skin texture, laxity and tone, patients all over are benefiting from this powerful but gentle combination of mechanical exfoliation, pore clarification (in fact, SilkPeel for acne is perhaps the fastest growing treatment protocol), and the delivery of skin-health promoting serums.

And yet, as the leading dermatologists increase their personal experience with the procedure, they are expanding the use of the products to take care of other areas of skin concern that have historically been underserved because there have not been good product or procedure choices.

Dr. Maryati Maharon is an aesthetic doctor in Malaysia, and the founder of the Faceworks Aesthetic Clinic.

“Besides the usual facial regime, we were also shown the technique for eye area and lips.  Lips was really interesting because prior to this, I never thought we could use the SilkPeel on the lips.  This to me is a very exciting new thing, since there are very limited procedures you can use on your lip.”

Having the SilkPeel lip rejuvenation done on her before she would treat any patient – Dr. Maharon was duly impressed.

“The lines of my lips are smoothened, my lips were rehydrated again, and the colour became a lot redder than previously,” writes Dr. Maharon, “It looked really healthy and it didn’t hurt one bit.  It is a good way to return the softness of lips, and actually you can puck out the lip more.  Combined with a lip conditioner, my lips have remained soft till today and I’m just [curious] to see how long the softness effect lasts.”

Beyond the face, she also notes some other areas of training that her colleagues are providing for SilkPeel.

“It is good for the neck to rehydrate, the décolletage area for people who love to [wear] low [neck-lines], to whiten underarms, to smoothen dry elbows and knees, and you can even use it for the bikini and Brazilian areas post waxing to lighten up darker areas and give the area a smoother feel.”

These are areas of common concern for female patients, covering a wide variety of skin types and age ranges, yet they often don’t even realize that there are options with SilkPeel that are now available.  ”I think I will be starting this bikini and Brazilian lightening treatments soon once I get [additional training] for those areas,” said Dr. Maharon.

This underscores the fact that SilkPeel has become a core offering not only in high-end medical/aesthetic practices around the United States and Europe, but also throughout Asia, South Africa and South America.  This does not surprise noted dermatologists who have been using it to treat their patients.

“SilkPeel has truly revolutionized the way I think of doing minimally-invasive procedures for my patients,” said Dr. Vic Narurkar, MD, FAAD.

Patients can get a procedure done in as little as 30 minutes – literally during their lunch break, and since it is a painless procedure that only gives a slight “rosy” glow for a short period of time afterwards, the patient can go right on with normal activities for the day.  Their skin will feel exceptionally clean, soft and smooth after the procedure, but the real benefits will come in the following days.  The solution applied to the skin through what is known as SilkPeel® Dermalinfusion™ will go to work while the diamond assisted exfoliation wakes the skin’s own regenerative processes.  The combined result is skin that not only looks healthier, but acts healthier as well.

Depending on the skin condition being treated, the physician may recommend four to six treatments, spaced about two weeks apart to get the best overall results.  Thereafter, patients tend to return about once every four to six weeks in order to keep their skin at its best.

IPL Photofacials – The Best Anti-Aging Treatment

Featured

IPL Photofacial is a new non-ablative technique to treat most common skin  problems. This treatment is said to be the best alternative treatment to some various cosmetic procedures like chemical peel, and laser resurfacing. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and the procedure is also known as Photofacial Rejuvenation or Fotofacial.

Millions of patients around the world are visiting their dermatologist because of skin problems such as fine lines and wrinkles, red complexion or rosacea, uneven skin tone or pigmentation, scars caused by acne, age spots, sun damage and other blemishes. Extensive research shows that this cosmetic procedure is effective in treating even the most sun damaged skin without leaving any marks or incisions.  It is important that your doctor or medical esthetician set realistic goals and expectations of possible treatment results, as results may vary depending on a variety of factors.

An IPL treatment is a painless procedure which doesn’t require any injections.  It is a cosmetic procedure which delivers a broadband of light directly to the surface of the damaged skin. The intense light is applied to the deeper part of the skin and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin safe. As new skin grows in the underlying layers, the sun damaged skin is shed off over time, leaving your new skin looking ravishing.

Unlike some other laser treatments, it only takes about two to three weeks before the results of the IPL Photofacial treatment are noticeable, depending on age, new skin growth occurs every 21 days.  IPL Photofacial treatments take approx 20-30 minutes per session, depending on the area being treated.  There is absolutely no downtime, and the patient can resume normal activities after the procedure is  completed.  IPL Photofacials are now the most preferred treatment to rejuvenate the skin because there is minimal to no risk, the procedure is painless, there is no downtime to the patient, and most sun damaged skin issues can be resolved in as little as 3 treatments.

Several treatments may be required depending on the skin condition being treated.  Some patients see results after only 3 treatments, while others may require up to 8 treatments for full results. Treatments should be spread out 2 to 3 weeks apart.  However, your doctor or medical esthetician may recommend other treatment modalities in between your Photofacial sessions to increase results; such as microdermabrasions, silkpeels, chemical peels, etc.  Side effects of Photofacials may also vary, such as erythema or redness to the skin, but this is minimal and may only last for 12-24 hours at worst.  After your Photofacial treatment your skin will feel tighter and you will notice that some of the sun damaged skin will turn darker, eventually as the skin sheds and new skin grows, your skin pigmentation will even out, and spots will dissapear, leaving your skin healthy and glowing with radiance.

Patients should consult their dermatologist or medical esthetician to be sure that they are qualified to have IPL or laser treatments. Some patients are not suitable to have this kind of treatment because of factors such as being unhealthy, certain skin types, and keloid prone skin. The average cost per session range from  $150 to $400 depending on what body part is being treated.

At Second Skin Medspa we offer single session treatments, as well as package treatments.  Please call us today to book you consultation with our skin specialist, or visit us at www.secondskinmedspa.com for more information.

Does a facial moisturizer with SPF 15 give you enough sun protection?

Featured

If you’re not in the sun at all during the day, then a moisturizer with SPF 15 may give you adequate protection against the suns rays.  However, if you are outside in the sun more that 5 min at a time, then an SPF 15 moisturizer is giving a false sense of security and in fact you are causing your skin new sun damage – wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, etc.

The Issue:

In order to get the sun protection from your sunscreen, you must a) put enough sunscreen product on your skin to cover the area thourally, and b) you need to re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours. You’re not going to do this with your SPF 15 facial moisturizer yet this is a critical sun protection step for when the sun is shining on your skin for a sustained period of time, and that includes reflected light bouncing off buildings, pavement, and sunlight coming through windows! (see article below),

Why re-apply every 2 hours?

Because the suns UV rays breaks down the active ingredients in sunscreen called Organic Actives. Most daily moisturizers with SPF rely on organic actives, and have only a minimal amount sufficient to create an SPF 15. This means your sun protection runs out during the day and you’re unprotected!

A daily moisturizer with SPF 15 is most likely giving you a false sense of sun protection security, and causing more damage than good over time.

The Solution:

What we recommend to our clients is to work real sunscreen into your daily skin regime: Cleanse, Tone, Serum and/or Eye Creme, Moisturizer and a sunscreen that is broad spectrum, and with an SPF of at least 30.  A broad spectrum sunscreen works to block out UVA rays, whereas organic actives work to block out UVB rays.. Your moisturizer serves to hydrate your skin to look and feel moist and plump, the sunscreen acts to keep those harmful UV rays off your skin. If you insist on having a moisturizer with sunscreen, another tip would be to mix a 30 SPF sunscreen with your moisturizer and apply to your skin. You do not need to purchase a pre-mixed solution, why not make your own!

Makeup should go on top of the sunscreen and it ideally should be a mineral makeup which gives you even more physical sun protection by bouncing the UV rays off your skin.. If you insist on enjoying the sun we’ve been having, make sure to wear a sun hat, and try to be in the shade as much as possible, and remember to re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours!

As you may or may not know, most of the undesirable skin changes we see with age like wrinkles, age spots and skin thinning are actually due to sun damage. Remember, you need sun protection all year round because even those winter UV rays cause skin aging and skin cancer.
