I recently visited Second Skin Medspa, to redeem a Botox voucher I had purchased. Yes.. CrossFiters and hardcore trainers such as myself, tend to make faces when lifting heavy loads, which isn’t great for the face at all.. lol. This wasn’t my first time getting Botox.. I have in fact received Botox from several places in the city, So I consider myself well-versed on the subject. That being said.. this was the FIRST and ONLY time that  my technician actually MARKED my faced, so that he would know where to inject! (most technicians ask you to raise your eyebrows and relax, to estimate where they will inject) I was pleasantly surprised at his diligence, to be honest, seeing as this WAS the only time this had ever happened to me.. so when I commented on this,  he asked me if I would trust a builder without a plan to build me a house! Pure genius!! Seriously! I actually left the place WITHOUT the bumps I normally get from the injections ( I normally get raised bumps and bruises on my forehead). NO ONE would have actually known where I was actually from. The Botox I received also looks great!! So yes.. I will be back.
Besides all this, I found all the staff to be super friendly and relaxed.. which was a great bonus! Sure the location is a little hard to find.. but consider this a well hidden gem within the city!!.
Highly recommend. WILL be back. Absolutely!!
GO!!

I am writting to recommend their 3D skin rejuvenation treatment and the botox treatment.
I’ve never had a silk peel, and definetaly never had a chemical peel, but Rose was so great at explaining everything that was happening to my skin and how she could help resolve some of my major issues that I had to try it.  Not sure if they still have the promotion going, but the price was fantastic.
I had the silkpeel first and I could already see that my skin was smooth and felt fresh. I couldn’t stop touching my face.  Then came the chemical peel. i felt a little stinging sensation, but it wasn’t burning or anything like that. The whole think took about 30 min and it made much more of a difference than the products I am using. It was well worth it.
One week after the treatment, I could see that my brown spots  were starting to come up to the surface and were literally peeling off and disappearing. Everything on the after care sheet and what I was told was happening, and I was very happy with the final results.
I showed up a week later for my botox treatment. If you think I was scared doing the chemical peel, how about when somebody is inserting a needle near your eye. The nurse was very calming and knowledable and answered all my questions and educated me on how botox actually works. The treatment only took about 5 min and he went over the after care sheet and took before pics and that was that. It was good experience. 3 days after this I could already see my very angry lines dissapearing. It was a weird feeling because i’ve been using thos angry lines for 40 somthing years and all of a sudden i couldn’t use them anymore. It looks great and I want to thank the owners and staff of second skin for being so courteous and kind throughout the whole process.

Update – 11/20/2012

My mom and I went to this med spa after purchasing a couple of vouchers for a manicure and pedicure, and we were very happy with the treatment provided by this company.
The spa feels very homey, almost like a high end condo.  My mother who never goes for manicures or pedicures felt very comfortable on the nice white leather couch. The lamps, mirrors, hardwood floors, etc, just made it seem as if we were at a friends house getting our nails done. We sat side by side and we really enjoyed ourselves.
I’ve never had a shellac manicure, but it did last a couple of weeks before I had to go back for a touchup. The ladies doing our nails were very nice and chatty, however, they new when not to interrupt us when we were talking, but knew exactly when to jump in and start up a conversation.
The pedicures were nicely and neatly done. I love their moveable pedicure station. They told us that it was for sanitary reasons and that they clean the bowl and take a part the jets and steralize after each and every customer, which later I found out is a very good technique because evidently one can get fungus, viruses, and other nasty things by using those pedicure chairs.
Overall, it was a great time!  They fit us in last minute, the spa is very clean and neat, and you can tell that they take their business seriously.
We both ended up buying a follow up package which was a very good deal to come in and have a touch up (shellac removal and re-application).
Thanks for the great experience, it won’t be forgotten.

Love it! Love it! Love it!
I had my first manicure, pedicure and facial at second skin and I was very impressed by the service and professionalism at this spa.  As other reviewers wrote, the spa is very homey and very clean. I don’t like going to the cheap manicure and pedicure places where you sit in a huge spa chair on what looks like an assembly line at a manufacturing plant.  They have a big beautiful white leather couch, beautiful floors, and barn doors (which I love and will be getting for my house).
The mani and pedi were very customized to my liking, I upgraded the prescription facial to a Silkpeel, and loved it!!!!!  My skin was smooth, plump and buffed to a nice shine.  I upgraded to the Shellac polish for my fingernails and after two weeks, there is only minor chipping.
I had a great time. I’m glad I found this spa and I will be returning.

I’m very happy with the treatments I receive at Second Skin.  I go to SS for underarm laser hair removal and after 3-4 treatments I see that my hairs don’t grow back as fast, and are much thinner. I hate shaving!!!! I’ve upgraded to other areas of my body, cant wait to be hair free.
Their prices are reasonable and they usually have some sort of promotion going on for the different seasons which is cool. I like the fact that I get confirmation emails that I can load into my phone and reminder calls 2 or 3 days before my appointment.
Give them I try, I did and that is why I am leaving this review.
Thanks

I really enjoy going to second skin. The staff are really friendly and outgoing, and they always make you feel comfortable, as if I’ve know them for years.  I’ve been going there for about 6 months and I can clearly see the results – my skin has gone from acne to much, much more clearer, healthier skin. Rose really cares about my skin and they don’t puch me to buy products or procedures.
I go for a silkpeel and chemical peel every 4-6 weeks, and I can tell you that the results are amazing.
I don’t write many reviews, but if this reviews helps one person to go in and take care of their skin, then I am glad to write it.  My confidence and self esteem has gone up a lot since I first started going to second skin.

Ive always wanted to try laser hair removal for the areas that I get razor irritation from daily shaving. I saw that Second Skin Medspa was doing a deal with laser hair removal treatments. I purchased this deal and made my phone call. Rose was very polite from the beginning and promptly made my appointment.
The location of the spa is very easy to get to and the atmosphere is clean, professional and relaxing. Upon arrival I did all my documents and entered the spacious treatment room (keep in mind im 6’2” so its big enough for me).
Rose explained to me what the laser does, how it works and what the benefits and procautions are. I felt confident in her experience and expertise. She kept me comfortable and relaxed and made sure I was in no pain. She talked me through the procedure, had some laughs and was on my way. I think this is a very easy and quick way to get rid of unwanted hair and definitely am excited to go back for my next appointment and see my end results.
Highly recommend this spa for any procedure you are looking to do!

I am having other treatments done and I to can see results. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. This is my first time writting a review and I’m glad that it is for Rose and Second Skin.

Best Laser Hair Removal Deal in Toronto!

At Second Skin Medspa we pride ourselves in our service and our results.  We have hundreds of satisfied customers who have see results with their Laser Hair Removal since we opened our doors in 2010!

What is our secret? We only use the best, FDA and Health Canada approved, Laser Hair Removal machines available to date – the Palomar Starlux.  This unit, combined with our knowledge of Laser Hair Removal, and using a variety of settings depending on our clients skin type, ethnic background, skin color, etc, makes Second Skin Medspa the leading Laser Hair Removal company in Toronto.

Please see our latest Laser Hair Removal Deal in Toronto!

How does Permanent Hair Removal work?
The Palomar Starlux has a unique Smooth Pulse technology which is designed to provide more efficient destruction of hair follicles than your standard IPL or Laser technology. It removes hair by sending out high-energy light pulses of various wavelengths to destroy both the bulb and the bulge of the hair follicle. The remaining heat is dispersed to the surrounding stem cells which are also destroyed, leading to permanent, long lasting hair removal.

How long will the hair removal procedure take?
Depending on the hand piece selection, each pulse treats about 2 inches of skin surface area, which can contain up to 100 hair follicles. The amount of time needed to treat a certain area depends on the size of area being treated. Treatments on the back or legs can take up to one hour, while treatments of the underarms and bikini generally take 15 minutes. The upper lip and chin can be done in less than 5 minutes!

Are there any side effects?
With any medical procedure there are always risks and possible side effects. The treated area may become slightly pink or red afterwards. This will go away within a few minutes to a few hours and in some rare cases a few days. The area may change pigment, and in some cases may burn or scab.

Is the treatment painful?
The treatment is generally not painful and is well tolerated. Some patients describe the treatment as a sensation like the snap of a rubber band – a lot less painful than plucking or waxing. Our Licensed Medical Estheticians will work diligently to help you achieve the look you want with as little pain as possible.

Are the results of hair removal permanent?
Everyone will need at least 4 to 7 treatments for effective permanent hair removal. The fabulous thing is that the remaining hair returns lighter and softer. Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Because hair grows at different stages, and IPL or Laser can only target hairs in the Anagen stage of growth, it is almost impossible to guarantee that all hair will be removed. Only 30% of hairs are in the Anagen stage at any one time. However, Second Skin does have a maintenance package available for those customers who need supplementary treatments after they have finished their package of treatments. Maintenance is 50% of the regular price of either a single session or a package.

Who is a candidate for hair removal?
If you are concerned about unwanted hair, you are probably a good candidate for IPL hair removal. The only limitation to this procedure is hair color. Because the IPL is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicle, it is not effective for white or gray hairs – since there is no pigment.

What areas can be treated?
Almost any area of the body can be treated. Please call or visit us if you have any questions regarding a certain area.

Are IPL treatments safe?
Yes, IPL treatments are completely safe. IPLs generate non-ionizing energy that does not result in the mutation of cells. Medical IPL applications have been continuously expanding since the mid 1960s. This increased use of IPLs is due primarily to the inherent safety and ability to selectively target specified tissue without harming surrounding structures. Plus, our Medical Estheticians and Nurses use the latest, most effective and safest equipment. At SECOND SKIN, we are committed to performing only those treatments that are clinically proven to eliminate unwanted hair. Our Medical Estheticians and Nurse have been specifically trained to offer you the safest process possible.

Which IPL is best for Hair Removal?
At SECOND SKIN, we currently use Palomar Starlux technology which is FDA and Health Canada approved, and much safer than Laser light technology which can cause severe burns. Palomar technology targets the hair follicle and bulb, leaving the skin intact, whereas Lasers, if not used properly, can cause major burns and injuries. There are a large variety of IPL and Laser machines on the market; however, our Certified Medical Estheticians (CMEs) use the most powerful and safest unit to date – The Palomar Starlux.

Visit us at Second Skin Medspa where your Laser Hair Removal consultation is always FREE!

We are located at 10 Eglinton Ave East, Toronto, ON – on the N.E. corner of Yonge and Eglinton.

Botox® Cosmetic – Best Botox® Treatment in Toronto

Fine lines and wrinkles? Frown lines? Angry Lines? Head-lines? Hyperhidrosis excessive sweating)? Crows Feet?

At Second Skin, our specialists will be able to help you overcome all these negative effects of aging with the use of Botox®!

Why Wrinkles?

The lines that appear between your brows (glabella), head-lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, etc., are actually a result of constant muscle movement over a long period of time: so called Dynamic Wrinkles (they appear only with muscle movement).  After years of repetitive muscle movement, those lines start to become more pronounced, and become Static Wrinkles (they appear with or without muscle movement). For women, whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated and more permanent.

Who administers Botox®?

At Second Skin Medpsa only Certified Medical Professionals administer Botox®.  All professionals at Second Skin have attended and received Botox® training and full certification, with mandatory yearly re-certification.  This is why we are the best Botox providers in Toronto.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a non-surgical treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe dynamic fine lines and wrinkles and/or help treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).  During treatment, very low doses of Botox® are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. Botox® treatment is usually done in about 15 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary depending on metabolism, etc.

How does Botox® work?

Very low doses of Botox® are administered via tiny injections directly into the muscle responsible for the frown lines. By blocking the release of the chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox® Cosmetic enables them to relax, so the skin appears smoother.

Is treatment with Botox® injections painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting Botox®, our skin therapist may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following Botox® treatment.

Who should not use Botox®?

Botox® should not be used in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s) and in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

Will I experience any side effects from Botox®?

Uncommon Botox® side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Some more common occurring adverse reactions include pain and erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection itself and resolve within the first week.

What will happen if I choose not to continue Botox® treatments?

If you do not continue Botox® treatments, the moderate to severe frown lines will gradually look like they did before treatment.

What areas can be treated?

Many people assume that Botox® is appropriate for all types of wrinkles, but that is not the case. Although all wrinkles are ultimately the result of aging, it’s the cause of the wrinkle that determines the treatment or treatments.

Static Wrinkles

Static wrinkles are caused by a loss of elasticity in the skin due to aging and environmental factors such as sun exposure or smoking. These types of wrinkles are best treated by dermal fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm, facial chemical peels, intense pulsed light or fractional treatments.  Botox® will only reduce, not eliminate static wrinkles.

Dynamic Wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscular contractions or facial expressions. In fact, some of these wrinkles, like worry lines, frown lines or laugh lines, are often named after facial expressions. When we’re young, our skin is more elastic and the lines easily bounce back to a normal, wrinkle free look. But as we age, these lines become permanent fixtures on our faces.
If the wrinkle is not caused by muscular contractions, a Botox® for wrinkles treatment will not be effective and another treatment option should be considered.
There are five major types of dynamic wrinkles that can be effectively treated with Botox® Cosmetic.

  • Glabellar lines (frown lines)
  • Obicularis Oris Type I (Smokers lines)
  • Forehead furrows (worry lines)
  • Crow’s feet, wrinkles radiating out from the corners of the eyes
  • Nasalis (Bunny Lines on the nasal folds)

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Does excessive sweating cause you embarrassment in social situations? Are you annoyed with stains on your clothes and frequent wardrobe changes? If antiperspirants or other medications aren’t effective, and you don’t want to risk surgery, you should consider Botox® for hyperhidrosis.  Botox® was approved in 2001 for excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis), Botox® has helped thousands of people with this stressful and frustrating condition.

Botox® for Hyperhidrosis is Clinically Proven

The approval of Botox® was based in part on a double-blind clinical study. The treatments were effective for 95% of patients in the first week and 82% of patients after 16 weeks. Adverse reactions were reported in only 4.5% of cases, with the primary reaction being a perceived increase in non-axillary sweating. Other side effects are rare but can include mild pain or bruising, both of which are temporary.

For more information about Botox® and Botox® Cosmetics, please visit Allergan official website.

How Does Botox® Work for Hyperhidrosis?

Botox® is injected into the affected area where it stops the nerves from sending the “sweat” signal to your sweat glands. Injections are done with an ultra-fine needle for a virtually pain-free experience. For facial hyperhidrosis, small injections are made near the hairline, where the sweating initiates. The nerves are not permanently affected and will return to their normal condition when the effects of Botox® wear off.

What is Botox® treatment like?

Botox® treatments are gentle and quick. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, so you will be able to continue with all of your usual activities immediately after your treatment. You can certainly drive yourself home or back to the office.

Botox® treatments take only a few minutes, and performed using the finest 30 gauge needles to maximize your comfort.

A small amount of discomfort may be felt when the needle is inserted and a few units of Botox® are applied to exactly the muscles which need relaxation. This sensation lasts approximately 5 seconds. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by the lack of discomfort, in particular when they are treated with the very fine and smooth 30 gauge needles.

Occasional patients experience a slight temporary bruising, perhaps the size of their baby fingernail, at an injection site. This can be hidden with cover up, and fades away in a few days.

What is the BOTOX ® jaw reduction procedure all about?

This technique is to reduce the flare and width of a wide jawline. Reducing the appearance of a wide jawline can help establish improved facial harmony and thereby elevate one’s attractiveness. In particular, some races like Koreans tend to have a stronger masseter muscle (chewing muscle) and a wider outer face. BOTOX ® jaw reduction can be undertaken to create a more pleasing facial shape.

Who is an appropriate candidate to have this procedure done?

The most important criterion to decide if you are a good candidate is the thickness of your masseter muscle. The relative thickness of the masseter can be easily determined by biting down hard and feeling the outer jawline. If the muscle appears to be almost rock hard and enlarged in appearance when you clench your teeth, you may be a good candidate to have this procedure done. Another important aspect to investigate relates to your habits that may predispose you to have a larger masseteric muscle and flared jawline. Excessive and frequent gum chewing can accentuate the size of the masseter over time. You may not know it, but you may be grinding your teeth (known as bruxism) that can also lead to a larger masseter as well. If you suspect this condition (sore jaws in the morning, painful or worn down teeth or TMJ pain/clicking), you should also consider seeking dental consultation.

How does BOTOX ® reduce the size of my jaw?

BOTOX ® weakens the injected muscle over time, which leads in turn to a reduction in the overall size. By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce over time giving longer-lasting results without compromise to the strength of the bone. The aesthetic effect of reducing the flared nature of the jawline is only truly appreciated in the right candidate.

Will I have problems chewing my food?

99% of patients experience no ill side-effects of chewing, however, if you do experience some tiring after chewing for a while, this phenomenon is only temporary and will go away over time.

Does the procedure hurt?

No. We use the smallest needle possible and use ice or numbing cream, if necessary, to virtually eliminate all discomfort.

What is the recovery like?

There is no recovery period or downtime. The procedure is complete in 2 to 3 minutes.

When will I see a difference and how long will the result last?

Unlike regular BOTOX ® of the upper face with results that can be evident in approximately 3 to 10 days following treatment and lasts about 3 to 4 months in time, BOTOX ® of the masseter takes about 6 weeks before you see the difference and will last typically between 3-6 months, depending on the strength and amount of product used in the muscle. However, at the end of the first week, you may notice that your jawline feels a lot softer when you bite down and feel it.

Are the results permanent?

Although some researchers have claimed that the procedure is permanent after 2 to 3 injection cycles, the human body is amazing at recovering itself. The effects will last longer and longer if you do keep up with your treatment cycles. We recommend a second session at 6 months following the first injection in order to effect reduction in bone and muscle bulk to attempt at greater longevity and thereafter start to spread dosing intervals out 9 months, then possibly 12 month intervals.

How much do Botox® treatments cost?

If you’re new to Botox®, you probably have no idea how much Botox® costs or how many units you will require. The following is a general guideline to help you get a better idea of the approximate costs (costs will be confirmed during your FREE consultation).

Typical Botox® treatments include:

  • Glabellar frown lines: (between and just above the eyebrows) 20-40 units of Botox®
  • Upper forehead lines: 20 – 40 units of Botox®
  • Crow’s feet: 20-40 units of Botox®
  • Hyperhidrosis 50-100 Units units of Botox®per underarm (100 Units total)
  • Jawline Reduction (Slimming) 25 Units units of Botox® per side (50 Units total)

These estimates are for women. Men may require higher dosages.

ABOUT BOTOX® and BOTOX Cosmetic®

BOTOX® is a prescription-only medical product that contains tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. BOTOX® was first approved for use in Canada 21 years ago for the treatment of strabismus (crossed eyes) and blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), making it the first botulinum toxin type A product approved in the world. Since then, BOTOX® has been recognized by regulatory authorities worldwide as an effective treatment for 21 different indications in approximately 80 countries, benefiting millions of patients worldwide.

In addition to its therapeutic uses, the same formulation of BOTOX® with dosing specific to moderate to severe glabella lines (frown lines between the eyebrows) has been available in Canada under the trade name BOTOX Cosmetic® since 2001. BOTOX Cosmetic® is also indicated for the treatment of upper facial rhytids (forehead wrinkles) and lateral canthus (crow’s feet).12

The safety and efficacy of BOTOX® have been well-established in approximately 50 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials and in approximately 11,000 patients treated with BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic in Allergan’s clinical trials. Worldwide, approximately 26 million vials of BOTOX® and BOTOX Cosmetic® have been distributed and approximately 29 million treatment sessions have been performed over the past 20 years (1989-2009). With approximately 2,300 articles on BOTOX® and BOTOX Cosmetic® in scientific and medical journals, BOTOX® is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.

Botox® Cosmetic injections

Complications can arise if Botox ® Cosmetic is injected incorrectly. Incorrect injections in the forehead or around the eyes can result in droopy eyelid muscles (ptosis); too much injected into the neck can cause muscle weakness and swallowing difficulties. Other adverse reactions may include the following signs and symptoms:

  • pain/bruising at the injection site
  • headache, face pain, eye swelling
  • skin rash/allergic reaction
  • local muscle weakness/paralysis of the face
  • irregular heart beat/chest pain
  • malaise (feeling generally unwell)

These adverse reactions are generally temporary, but could last several months.

A rare but serious reaction to Botox injection is the possibility of the toxin spreading to other parts of the body. This adverse reaction has mainly been associated with non-cosmetic use. These reactions may include the following signs and symptoms:

  • muscle weakness away from the injection site
  • pneumonia
  • swallowing difficulties
  • difficulty speaking
  • difficulty breathing

If you are using Botox® Cosmetic and experience any of these signs and symptoms, seek immediate medical care.

3D Skin Rejuvenation Toronto

Would you like to know the secret to beautiful, healthy skin, free of charge?  Answer: The secret to healthy skin is CELLULAR TURNOVER!

Why do kids have such great looking skin? They have such great skin because their cellular turnover only takes 14 days!  As we age and get to our 20′s, it takes approx. 30 days for our cells to turnover. The worst news…as we get into our 40′s, it could take up to 50 days for our skin cells to turn over resulting in rough, grayish, scaly looking skin.

So, by now you should be wondering what I mean by cellular turnover, right?  Cellular turnover is the term used to describe the constant shedding of dead skin cells and subsequent replacement with younger cells.

How do we achieve cellular turnover?   Answer: Mechanical, Natural, and/or chemical exfoliation.

Here are some facts before we carry on:

  • Your skin is composed of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or outer layer of the skin, is a tough, protective layer. The dermis, or inner layer, is thicker than the epidermis and provides your skin its strength and elasticity. The dermis houses fibroblast cells which are responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Exfoliation trigger these cells to jump into action, thereby stimulating collagen and elastin production for more youthful looking skin.
  • 90% of aging is the result of UV exposure! Only 10% is caused by natural aging. Protect your skin all year long with sunscreen.
  • Your body – and ALL types of skin – needs water to survive – inside and out of the cells. At Second Skin Medspa we only use medical grade products (Second Skin Solutions) which allows you to put moisture and topical solutions (CoQ 10, DMAE, etc) back into the skin to improve the look and feel of your skin.
  • Skin cell turnover naturally slows with age. You can promote cell turnover and more youthful and healthier looking skin with the use of natural, chemical or mechanical exfoliants.
  • Skin cells repair at night, making it essential to using a night time moisturizer to enhance this benefit.
  • The skin around your eyes is delicate and thinner, making specialized eye care essential.  At Second Skin Medspa, we use 99% pure medical grade Collagen and Elastin products which are small enough to penetrate the skin and work it’s way back into the dermis in order to achieve plumpness and tightness again.

So, how is Second Skin Medspa able to achieve cellular turnover? Answer: through our 3D Skin Rejuvenation treatment.

Whether your concerned about fine lines and wrinckles, loss of elasticity, rough skin, pigmentation or sun spots, Second Skin Medspas’ 3D Skin Rejuvenation will target your main concern and make your skin look and feel as young as you do.

Right now, and until September 29 you will be able to try our 1D, 2D or 3D treatment at 50% Off the regular price:

1D Option – Silkpeel Dermalinfusion $79 (Reg. $159).

SilkPeel is a breakthrough procedure that exfoliates the skin while infusing patient specific topical medication. The SilkPeel stimulates new cell growth and addresses each patient’s specific skin condition.

2D Option – Silkpeel + Chemical Peel OR Photofacial $149 (Reg. $288).

Adding a Chemical Peel OR Photofacial to your Silkpeel treatment helps to further break up the hardened melanin and exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin, revealing a new skin layer with improved tone, texture and color. The stronger the peel, the deeper it penetrates into the skin for maximum cell renewal and collagen synthesis.

3D Option – Silkpeel + Chemical Peel + Photofacial $199 (Reg. $388).

Having a Silkpeel, a photofacial and finally a Chemical Peel is the most effective technique to fully rejuvenate your skin. The Silkpeel exfoliates the skin thoroughly, stimulating new cell growth. The Photofacial breaks up the hardened melanin in the
skin, allowing it to rise to the surface, and naturally exfoliate off of the skin. The chemical peel eats up the dead skin cells, and allows  for new, healthy skin cell growth. The final product is new, clean, fresh skin with little to no pigmentation.

3D Steps to Beautiful Skin Rejuvenation – Only at Second Skin Medspa!

Featured

So, you’ve enjoyed the beautiful summer we’ve been having by laying out in the sunshine and darkening your skin to get that bronze tanned look – otherwise known as Sun Damage.

What exactly is a Tan?

Simply put – Sun Damage!  When you are exposed to UVA and UVB radiation (Sunlight), your skin either spreads out the melanin already in your skin to give you an immediate tan, or your skin produces more melanin which darkens your skin over a few days.  Either way your skin darkens in order to protect itself from further sun damage to the underlying layers. The darker your skin, the less likely UVA and UVB can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin possibly causing DNA and cellular damage.  Damage can include the breaking down of collagen and elastin: giving you that rubbery, leathery, wrinkled look, age spots, actinic keratoses, and skin cancer – including melanoma, the most serious type.  UV exposure can also cause an increase in the thickness of the dead skin cell layer of your skin (stratum corneum), giving your skin the thick, greyish, unhealthy look.

Wrinkles

The sun’s rays make skin look old and wrinkled years before it should. More than 80% of the signs of skin aging in adults are the result of the tans they had as teens before the age of 18. That’s because over time, the sun’s ultraviolet light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.

Pigmentation

Too much sun also causes irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin. Some areas of the skin appear darker, while others look lighter. The sun can also cause a permanent stretching of small blood vessels, giving your skin a reddish appearance.

What is 3D Rejuvenation?

In order to reverse the effects of Sun Damage: fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, brown spots, age spots, and re-introducing collagen and elastin into your skin, Second Skin Medspa has come up with 3D Rejuvenation, which includes:

(1D) Silkpeel Dermalinfusion

The SilkPeel is a breakthrough procedure that exfoliates the skin while infusing patient-specific topical medication. The SilkPeel stimulates new cell growth and addresses each patient’s specific skin condition. Skin conditions treated are:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne
  • Dry, irritated skin
  • Rosacea
  • Photodamage
  • Dehydration and fine wrinkles

(2D) IPL Photofacial (+ Silkpeel Dermalinfusion)

The Photofacial is a safe and reliable process of using an Intense Pulsed Light to treat facial redness and flushing from rosacea, as well as multiple symptoms of aging skin. Symptoms include fine lines, red blemishes, mottled coloration, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse or rough skin, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and general sun damage. The result is a youthful, smooth and revitalized appearance.

The IPL hand-piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied. A treatment generally lasts about half an hour. Immediately following a treatment, the skin may appear red and flushed and tiny capillaries may appear more visible. But, this will give way to healthy, young-looking skin. After having a photofacial you can resume all regular activities, there is absolutely NO DOWNTIME after this procedure.

In the coming days following your treatment, you will notice your pigmentation darken, and even see visible “coffee grinds” on the top layers of your skin which will gently exfoliate off your skin, revealing fresh, new, healthy skin beneath.

(3D) PCA Chemical Peel (+IPL Photofacial + Silkpeel Dermalinfusion)

A PCA Chemical Peel at Second Skin Medspa can:

  • Smooth rough skin and improve its texture
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Eliminate brown splotches and age spots
  • Improve the appearance of scars caused by acne
  • Control acne breakouts

Following the chemical peel treatment most patients immediately resume their normal activities. Most patients report that their skin feels softer and smoother. Most post-peel redness is slight and can be covered with makeup. Some patients may experience slight flaking in the few days following the peel treatment, but it is not necessary to see flaking skin for the peel to be effective.

At Second Skin Medspa the combination of all 3 of these treatments results in younger, fresher, healthier looking skin.  Rough, dry skin is softened. Pigmentation is reduced or eliminated, leading to a more even type skin tone. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced or eliminated, leading to collagen and elastin re-generation and skin tightening.  Age or Brown spots are broken down and rise to the surface of the skin, gently being exfoliated, and leading to removal of these pesky dark spots.

It takes the skin, on average, 28 days to turnover (new skin to move from the bottom layer to the top layer), thus, you will see ongoing positive results days and weeks after your treatments.  Although you will see results after your very first treatment, we recommend a series of 3 treatments for optimal results.

Call Second Skin Medspa today for your free skin analysis and consultation.  EveryBODY is different, and thus we tailor our treatments based on your skin type, skin condition and the type of results you are looking for.

Botox Jawline Reduction Special – Only at Second Skin Medspa

Featured

Botox Jawline Reduction (Jawline Slimming) for only $350 (Reg. $500)!

While a strong, square jawline can be distinctly masculine and desirable in some male patients, many female patients are seeking softer more feminized shape to their face. Particularly in Asian females, changing the shape of the face from square to a more attractive oval shape can add a more gentle graceful appearance.

Jaw reduction surgery used to be the only option for many patients, however, patients had long recovery times, inconsistent and unnatural results. Now Botox has revolutionized facial reshaping. Botox allows for changing the shape of the face without a scalpel, pain, swelling and zero downtime.

Botox  jaw reduction is a specialized technique to reduce the width of the jawline changing an overly square jawline to a more attractive oval or heart shaped face.In some patients, the the masseter muscle, a chewing muscle, is enlarged creating extra facial width. Botox selectively weakens this muscle over time leading to an overall reduction in the size of this muscle.

Botox can weaken the masseter muscle giving a softer angle at the jaw and a less square jaw. By blocking the action of selected muscles, very much like in treating wrinkles, we can cause the eventual atrophy (loss of muscle size) in those muscles. Except here we inject Botox into the bulk of the muscle. Patients generally notice softening of the masseter muscle at one week and softening of the jawline at around 6-8 weeks. Some researchers have noticed “permanent changes” to the jaw line in 2-3 treatments. However, it is advised that patients expect long term benefit but not permanent changes. Patients with underlying bruxism, clenching of the teeth, may never obtain permanent results due to the fact the muscle is strengthened.

Some personal habits can contribute to your enlarged jaw muscles – the masseter. Excessive chewing of hard items/food and chewing gum can lead to an enlarged masseter muscle. Bruxism, discussed later, can also enlarge the muscles for the same reason – excessive use which causes the muscle to hypertrophy.

Second Skin Medspa is now offering Jawline Reduction treatments for only $350* (Reg. $500).  This includes medical consultation, administration of up to 30 units of Botox (30 units of Botox is the minimum required, more may be needed depending on muscle strength and size), and follow up consultation.  Call us at 416.481.SKIN(7546) or email us at info@secondskinmedspa.com!  This deal will not last long…

Latisse on Sale – Only at Second Skin Medspa!

Featured

LATISSE® solution (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% – is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.

Hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.

We want long eyelashes too!  We personally use it and are amazed at the actual results. So yes, Latisse really works when used as directed.

In short, think of Latisse® as nourishment for your eyelashes…
The active ingredient in Latisse™ eyelash grower is called bimatoprost. Research suggests that growth of eyelashes occurs by increasing the percent of hairs in, and the duration of, the anagen (or growth) phase of the hair follicle. Bimatoprost can prolong this growth phase, hence you get longer lashes. It also appears to help generate extra lashes, so your lashes get fuller.

While the exact mechanism is unknown, it appears Latisse™ strengthens your lashes and increases the life cycle of each lash. Latisse™ also increases the pigment, or color of the lash. Thus, over the treatment course with Latisse™ eyelash grower, all of your own lashes become fuller, longer, thicker and darker. Naturally, when you stop using the product, your eyelashes will eventually return to their original state.

Your lashes don’t just look better using Latisse, they are better!

Latisse was clinically tested in a pivotal Phase III, multi-center, double-masked, placebo-controlled study to assess its safety and efficacy in which all endpoints (improved eyelash prominence, length, thickness and darkness) were met. Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in Latisse, was first approved in 2001 as a medical product to lower intraocular pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Patients treated with bimatoprost for this specific eye condition experienced eyelash growth as a side effect.

The long-term safety of bimatoprost for therapeutic use has been recognized by the medical community and well established based on use in 32 clinical trials involving more than 5,700 glaucoma patients and more than 13 years of clinical trial experience. Given the existing and substantial clinical and post-marketing safety data with bimatoprost solution 0.03%, coupled with the positive results from the Phase III Latisse study, Latisse provides patients a clinically meaningful aesthetic benefit with a favorable safety profile.

Contact Second Skin Medspa today to book your appointment for a free consultation, instructional use on how to apply Latisse, and purchase a 3 month supply of Latisse for only $125 (reg. $150). Limited Supply Available!

Botox for Jawline Slimming at Second Skin Medspa

Featured

Square jaws can be due to the enlargement of the jaw muscles used for biting (masseter hypertrophy). The muscles can be large enough to bulk up the sides of the face, giving it a square appearance.

This condition is particularly common in the Oriental population, where slim almond shaped faces are deemed most desirable. Fortunately, Botox and/or Dysport can be used to quickly and safely slim down square faces.

Some people have very prominent  jaw muscles of the lower face, known as ‘masseter hypertrophy’. This can occur in patients suffering teeth grinding (bruxism) or it may simply be part of your normal facial anatomy.  When these muscles are bulky, they create a widening effect of the lower face. In women, a ‘squared – jaw’ appearance is perceived to be more ‘masculine’. This is most apparent when viewing a persons face head on.

Botox or Dysport can be used easily and effectively to weaken the masseter muscles. Patient will notice that the muscles as a consequence also get smaller over a period of approximately 4- 8 weeks. The procedure therefore slims the lower face gently over a period of time. It is also known as ‘lower facial contouring’.

Jaw ReductionFrequently Asked Questions

  • What is the BOTOX ® / DYSPORT jaw reduction procedure all about? This technique is to reduce the flare and width of a wide jawline. Reducing the appearance of a wide jawline can help establish improved facial harmony and thereby elevate one’s attractiveness. In particular, some races like Koreans tend to have a stronger masseter muscle (chewing muscle) and a wider outer face. BOTOX ® or DYSPORT jaw reduction can be undertaken to create a more pleasing facial shape.
  • Who is an appropriate candidate to have this procedure done?
  • How does BOTOX ® / DYSPORT reduce the size of my jaws? BOTOX ® or DYSPORT weakens the injected muscle over time, which leads in turn to a reduction in the overall size.  By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce over time giving longer-lasting results without compromise to the strength of the bone.  The aesthetic effect of reducing the flared nature of the jawline is only truly appreciated in the right candidate.
  • Will I have problems chewing my food? 99% of patients experience no ill side-effects of chewing, however, if you do experience some tiring after chewing for a while, this phenomenon is only temporary and will go away over time.
  • Does the procedure hurt? No. We use the smallest needle possible and use ice or numbing cream, if neccessary, to virtually eliminate all discomfort.
  • What is the recovery like? There is no recovery period or downtime. The procedure is complete in 2 to 3 minutes.
  • When will I see a difference and how long will the result last? Unlike regular BOTOX ® or DYSPORT of the upper face with results that can be evident in approximately 3 to 10 days following treatment and lasts about 3 to 4 months in time, BOTOX ® or DYSPORT of the masseter takes about 6 weeks before you see the difference and will last typically between 3-6 months, depending on the strength and amount of product used in the muscle.  However, at the end of the first week, you may notice that your jawline feels a lot softer when you bite down and feel it.
  • Are the results permanent?  Although some researchers have claimed that the procedure is permanent after 2 to 3 injection cycles, the human body is amazing at recovering itself.  The effects will last longer and longer if you do keep up with your treatment cycles.  We recommend a second session at 6 months following the first injection in order to effect reduction in bone and muscle bulk to attempt at greater longevity and thereafter start to spread dosing intervals out 9 months, then possibly 12 month intervals.

At Second Skin Medspa we work closely with every patient to achieve optimum results. We urge you to come in for a FREE consultation with our medical professional in order to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. If your square jaw is bothering you and/or are looking for a more slimmer looking jaw, then visit us at Second Skin Medspa and EXPERIENCE THE RESULTS!

Cheap Manicures and Pedicures Worth Dying For – Literally!

Featured

So, hate paying full price for a manicure or pedicure? Looking for the cheapest deals online? Well, you get what you pay for!

Ever think how a salon or spa can offer such low prices on manicures or pedicures or both? If they are charging only $20 for a Mani and Pedi which takes 1 hour and 15 min and pay an employee $13-16 an hour, plus  pay for rent, product, supplies, utilities, etc, where can they possibly be cutting costs?!?

What are the possible risks of getting a cheap manicure or pedicure, well, let’s see:

Fungal Infections

Bacterial Infections

Viral Infections (such as HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C)

Athletes Foot

Warts

The biggest issue comes with low paid, new or untrained Estheticians, or an owner that needs to cut costs in order to keep up with customer turnover.  Some things to look out for:

Use of unsanitary tools

Some salons sterilize their nail equipment in a machine called an autoclave while others use chemicals to remove bacteria and germs. If proper procedure isn’t followed during the sterilization steps, the risk of a bacterial or fungal infection increases. There are also items such as emery boards that need to be discarded after a single use. Some cheap nail salons try to save money by reusing these items on more than one patron. This potentially puts you at risk for a serious bacterial or fungal infection.

Use of untrained personnel

Many cheap nail salons hire personnel with inadequate experience and training. When a nail attendant isn’t properly trained, there’s a risk of creating small nicks along the edges of the nail beds when performing a manicure which can increase the risk for infection, particularly if instruments aren’t as sanitary as they should be.

How do you know when cheap nail salons are cutting corners and what can you do to protect yourself? Here are some suggestions:

1.Be skeptical of nail salons that offer pricing that sounds too good to be true. It probably is. Do the math!!!

2. Beware of nail salons that appear unclean. Check the counters, floors, and    bathrooms for signs of uncleanliness and lack of attention to detail.

3. Look for visible signs that the nail salon operators and workers are certified.    Certificates should be posted prominently on the walls.

4. Ask questions!!  Can your treatment provider answer your questions about safety standards, policy and procedures, etc, if not, think twice.

5. Consider bringing some of your own manicure tools and request that the operator use them.

6.Watch for signs of nail infection including redness and swelling.

At Second Skin Medspa we only use FDA and Health Canada products and we go above and beyond the minimum standards set by the Province of Ontario and by Health Canada.  Our clients are always welcome to have a look around our Medical Spa and/or ask us about our safety procedures before having ever having their treatment.

Was this blog post meant to scare you, NO! Was it meant to open your eyes and think about the subject of cheap manicure and pedicure offers, ABSOLUTELY! Does it mean you should never have a manicure or pedicure again, NO! Do we want you to use common sense before choosing a manicure/pedicure service provider…you bet your life we do – literally!
